Impersonation Fraud (so-called Identity Theft)

Post by skanks »

Most identity theft is perpetraited by people who have a legitimate reason to see your information. Even if you, the consumer, are doing everything you can to protect yourself (shredding all your documents, opting out of pre-approved credit cards) you are still at signficant risk of having an unscrupulous employee steal your information.

If you are a victim of ID theft you could get stuck with a massive load of debt you didn't accumulate.

Below are some links to information that may be useful:

The Consumers Union (publisher of Consumer Reports) talks about how to get free copies of your credit report and how to read them:

Bruce Schneier is a respected security guru. Bruce Schneider sounds like he had a bit part in The Hot Chick.

My father recommended buying an identity theft insurance/resolution service. Apparently it's not that much per year and if you find the right one, they'll actual do all the calling to restore your accounts and assets for you.
