The Hunger Games

Post by VLSmooth »

I guess I'm late to the party, but I got strong Battle Royale (BR) vibes from the recently released theatrical trailer for "The Hunger Games" (HG)

It seems I wasn't the only one:

Battle Royal is much more brutal -- graphic and continuous violence, sex, profanity. It is not a children's book. Hunger Games is a YA novel, and as such it focuses more on the relationships between its central characters (an aspect of the trilogy that can become tedious for older readers). I found Battle Royal to be more gripping and more disturbing, with themes that more closely relate to Golding's Lord of the Flies (Takami has a lot to say about the human propensity for violence). Collins' novel is much more focused on how horrible the Panem government is -- Katniss, for example, never finds herself drawn into the horrors of the games the way Takami's characters do. If Takami's novel (like Golding's) illuminates the darkness at the heart of humanity, then Collins's novel (like Orwell's 1984) illuminates the evils of totalitarianism.
I'm not saying HG is bad, especially since I haven't read it. I'm pretty sure I'd enjoy it. I'm just shocked how quickly BR came to mind.

I originally heard of the trailer here:

Wife is reading this Trilogy now on the Touchpad, does look like a pretty cool movie. Better than anything I'll see this year I bet. Harold and Kumar let me down!
It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but it doesn't take any to just sit there with a dumb look on your face.

I read the trilogy a couple months ago. It was good, though rather pessimistic. I'm looking forward to the movies.
