CPU Drivers

What's up with "drivers" for the CPU and chipset? Intel offers them, but why would I ever want to install them?
Chipset drivers affect stuff like graphics, sound, and IO. If you use integrated versions of any of those, you'd probably want them.
I admit to being curious about the CPU side. I have some theories but they are just speculation. I will ask.
