LCD monitors

Amber wants to buy me a monitor for Christmas. She's thinking 19", and I concur because I haven't got the hardware to drive a 1600x1200 or greater display. 1440x900 is still an option, I guess, but really we're looking at 1280x1024.
I went and looked at some LCDs at Office Depot. After configuring them properly so I could get a decent picture out of them, I decided I couldn't tell the difference between a 16ms response time and a 8ms response time, although I didn't have the ability to run any 3D games to see if I can detect smearing while doing a 180.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

I guess I should mention that the low-contrast monitors looked like ass when looking at stills, so at least 700:1 and preferably better. The 250 cd/m2 also looked too dim inside the fluorescent-lit store, so I'm thinking at least 300 cd/m2.
I bet they were all 6 bit LCDs, and I really couldn't detect any dithering, so I'm not worried about that, really.

I need a 19"+ one too since my 19" dell/trinitron crt is flaking out on me. The Dell 2001fp 20" I have has been prety decent for the past 2 years. I've been using it in vertical mode 1200x1600 mode, but it sucks for games.... at 8ms. I've played enough CS to be able to tell the difference between 60, 85 & 100 Hz on CRTs and the Dell's refresh was noticable to annoy. I read the 2ms LCDs of late are pretty decent. How much you looking to spend? I made the mistake of checking out black friday (mobs... and mobs... bad idea) and those cheap LCDs they had those sales on didn't really impress me. think I'd prefer to buy online sadly.

Like no more than $300, probably $170. All the monitor reviews I find on the web are from 2005 when the Dell 1905 and 1907 came out. Where are the newer reviews?

Hanns G HX-191DPB? $189
I'm upgrading from my 1997 17" Dell CRT. I mostly run it at 1280x1024, which is why I'm focusing on that resolution in LCDs.

I'm never going to watch a movie on it, that's what the TV is for. So I'm leaning away from the Dell, with the good color but slower response and lower contrast.

Viewsonic 19". $265 with mailin rebate. 2ms, but only 270cd/m^2. Presumably 500:1 contrast ratio.

My laptop's S-Video out actually looks pretty decent on a tv. But once I went 1600x1200, its hard to go back to 1280. Kinda like when everyone was in 1024 before.

Nope, still use my flakey randomly brightness changing CRT for gaming. I did game a bit on the LCD but in windowed mode which wasn't too horrible since you can change music and get IMs hehe.

I figured out lowering my contrast and brightness from 50ish to 30ish got rid of all the fuzzy text problems and the random brightness changes. At least for now!

So I switched my Montor long-ways (1200x1600) and have my entire toolbar burned into one corner. It's wonderful.
