Re: College admissions scandal

Those are all fields with so much gray area and tax and other benefits written into the laws that you can drive an oil tanker through.

Also, I discovered that the cable bolt on the rear derailleur is completely stripped, and I'm not sure how to remove it short of getting it drilled out, which doesn't seem worth it. This has worked well for me... https://smile.amazon.com/Speed-Out-As-Seen-Extractor/dp/B00N98I9IU/ I got a set for $5...

Re: Battle Royale FPS games

I tried fortnight on a tablet since Erik wants to play it and I figured I should try it first. I have no idea what's going on in that game and I have no idea how to play a fps without a mouse and keyboard or at least a controller. Touch screens were not meant for gaming.

Quick, feed it all the code in GitHub and see what it does! I bet it won't comment its code either.

Re: The internet doesn't work without Tech Giants

Heh, they had the author on NPR a couple times throughout this experiment. Between AWS, Google Cloud and Azure, it's really hard to go anywhere on the internet and avoid them. Facebook and Apple can be cut out easily enough I think and blocking their web bugs just make things better. On the phone si...

Re: fail thread

Anyone who was truly surprised by a racy take on Handmaid’s Tale has clearly not been paying attention to the ever-expanding power of the sexy-Halloween-costume industrial complex. At this point, entire sites are devoted to churning out sensual versions of the uniforms of entirely mundane occupatio...

Torvalds to learn empathy

Is this the start of tech's version of the #metoo movement? #dontbeadick ?

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/09 ... n-empathy/

Maybe he'll code up what he learns into a kernel update for all internet trolls.

Re: Monopsony antitrust

Without the government stepping in, or people creating/joining unions in massive numbers and not having the courts weaken them, I don't see this dynamic changing much. Citizens United has just been helping skew things further and it's a huge reason why the Supreme Court is such a big deal. People sh...

Or tell the fab guys to stop trying to charge so much of a premium when the product is obviously not enough better to warrant it. Really, Intel should be offering new-customer/preferred-customer discounts to attract people to their platform so they might get hooked on it. Also, Intel needs to get mu...

GloFo seems to be going the TI route, but without the massive library of legacy designs necessary to keep it afloat :-\ IBM is likely to continue to develop technology, but it's gotta find another partner to continue the development. Where's Trump to keep our fabs open and not running away to China ...

Well, shit. Maybe I can blame Canada again? My eyes are stinging. https://www.opb.org/news/article/oregon-washington-wildfire-smoke-poor-air-quality/ I was in SC last Thursday and you could see blue sky overhead. This I guess is something else? The cold air in the bay area keeps the smoke either hi...

Re: I don't believe in aliens

What would constitute a far more interesting piece to me is the theological point of view. What does the lack of aliens say about scripture? True, especially given the recent meta-study of drake equation parameters suggesting we're likely alone in the universe, or at least our galaxy. I've been rew...

You're welcome. Luckily, the bay area's micro climate has been pushing all the ash up and over us, so the air quality hasn't been as bad... We have orangy/hazy skies though which are kinda weird looking.

Re: OS SDKs Are Considered Harmful!?

Nope, you haven't been following the rise of perf of JS in browsers and the fact that browser apps have access to worker threads that effectively make use of multi-core cpus and even have been starting to get more direct access to the GPU. Why do you think Chromebooks even exist?
