Re: anybody on the East Coast still alive?

My experience with Hurricane/Superstorm Sandy is very different than the hurricanes I endured on the west coast of Florida, which is much less susceptible to hurricanes than the east. Hurricanes that crossed Florida from east-to-west were drastically weakened by the time they reached me. Peijen live...

Re: anybody on the East Coast still alive?

Main power was restored to my building this morning (was on generator power ~8:45pm last night), internet is up, water is down (pumps need repair), elevators are down (1st floor was flooded; water has receded). I have ~0.5 gallons of good water, ~1.5 gallons of old plastic bottled water. Food is fin...

...Apple A6 core layout done by hand

Detailed analysis of Apple A6 core reveals layout done by hand http://arstechnica.com/apple/2012/09/detailed-analysis-of-apple-a6-core-reveals-layout-done-by-hand/ This headline reminds me of the time my partner and I pulled an all-nighter in the ECE cluster to reduce the size of our 18-322 8-bit s...

And with that I'm the only one of the 7 Dave asked about not to mentioned!

What do I win?

p.s. computer's running great. The loudest component is now the power supply in my old 24" Dell 2405FPW lcd monitor (/sigh).

Good case deal; $42.98 for an Antec 1100 last I checked. That's a huge discount.

Re: 2012 Computer Notes (advice welcome!)

Thanks and done! I chatted with Amazon customer service in case they wanted to price match instead. Since it's a different model with no exchanges I have to return it. They handled the return and gave me a link to the paid ups printout. After that I ordered the barebones one for $194.99 (estimated d...

Re: 2012 Computer Notes (advice welcome!)

You have a good point. This time the barebones version is $15 cheaper than the desktop kit too! (they were the same price last time iirc). It'll delay the build to next week though (and save $55 since I'm sticking to Amazon).

Re: Computer for ~$700-800

Unfortunately, games are often large :( For example, Team Fortress 2 is over 10 gigabytes by itself. I also can't see a $50 SSD being more than 50 gigabytes today at most. My C:\Windows directory alone is 26.4 gigabytes.

Re: Computer for ~$700-800

If you don't care about noise, you can save a lot of money over what I ordered. For a $700-$800 gaming rig it'll be close. You'll most likely be spending mostly on video card and processor (<$400). 4 GB of RAM is <50$, case + PSU <$100, motherboard <$100, operating system <$150 which is <$800. Anyth...
