Flexcar just started in Pittsburgh last month (13 cars, apparently), and I've been considering signing up. What are your thoughts on it, Jon, since you've used it?

I bought a bulk pack of soft Hearos for friends who come over for music jam sessions. They're pretty comfortable, and may be the same style you got.

I bought the Sony Ericsson Walkman w810i a few months ago. I like it. It was expensive, though, because I bought it retail (buy.com), but it's not locked to any carrier.

15710181. How do we remember these things? I only used ICQ for a relatively short time, and haven't touched it in many years!

"Queen" could be a pretty good movie. I mean, it would have a rocking soundtrack for sure. What's this about Princess Di?

I took that quiz a while ago. I think it was one somebody's Livejournal. I also got no accent! I am amazing.

Happy Thanksgiving! CMU computer store raised the prices. I think it's as high as $20 for Office now, plus tax. Office Mac, Office XP, and Windows are all probably the same price, or at least very similar prices. I like my Macs*, so I vote for the MacBook. You can of course also dual boot with Boot ...

When you can afford to get a custom system made for the purpose, rather than building and messing with a linux system you don't want to deal with, then you get the custom system.

Re: Awesome

I can't remember the last time I had a snow day. Did we ever have one at CMU? There was one during the first year of grad school. Were you still around at that point? I think it was something like 2 feet of snow over a weekend. Of course, snow day doesn't mean as much when you have projects instead...

The LiDE Windows software (available from deep within the bowels of Canon's website) lets you press a button on the scanner and launch Canon's special scanning stuff. I've never used it, though. Perhaps the Windows version of the Gimp would do you well?

The best deal I've seen in B&W lasers is the Brother HL-1440, and presumably its descendants. I've had one for several years, my dad has one at home and one at the office, and I know of several other people who also have one at home and one at the office. Everybody's happy with it. You can get it at...

I've never actually burned a DVD, but I need to start doing that because movies are taking up way too much of my drive space. Are there any particular kinds of DVD-R that would be good to purchase or avoid? I've got a standard iMac DVD-RW+-BBQ drive, for reference.

Butter with far more accurate colors, though only a professional artist could tell the difference. 32 vs 64 bit color makes a big difference in gradients, particularly slow fairly dark ones. This shows up in 3d scenes with multiple render passes, or in Photoshop if you do a gradient over a large ar...
