Re: HP The Machine

Developers are just too damn young and ignorant. Yay, we reinvented VB 5, but now it's TEH WEB-NESS! Yes, replacing JS would make web programming less bad. Much like cutting your own arm off is less bad with a sharp saw than a butter knife. Usually, though, cutting one's own arm off is the wrong sol...

Re: WTF, hardware guys?

I completely ignore all hardware developments except for a month or two prior to upgrading. It's worked fine for the last few upgrade cycles. Give the hardware engineers a few years to do their thing, and when I start paying attention again, the current tech is magically significantly faster than be...

WTF, hardware guys?

My desktop is three years old , so I started reading reviews to figure out what to replace it with. Looking at the comparisons between contemporary CPUs, I'd homed in on an i5 or i7 haswell. As I was trying to decide whether I'd need HyperThreading for anything, I stumbled across an article that pu...

You know, that's whats been missing from the games we've played recently: "accidentally" dumping an underground ocean onto your allies.

I've certainly recommended both, though maybe not here. "Jar Jar Binks, you're a genius!" "Summon Bigger Fish"

Re: 2012 Computer Notes (advice welcome!)

Where's the 4K content going to come from, though? This technology seems likely to follow 3D TV's path. Expensive equipment with expensive, generally mediocre content is not a great business strategy.

Re: Versioning non-ASCII files

Word (and maybe some of the other Office applications) has some version control support built into itself. It can graphically compare and merge documents. So, one option is configure your version control client of choice to delegate .doc[x] diffs to Word. A project I was on about ten years ago had R...

Re: LoL

In the FPS games I have played, there was generally a complete lack of matchmaking. It just generates a server list, you connect to the lowest latency one, and you get stomped. Why is that? Why aren't there leagues? Actually, for whatever reason, I've found the public TF2 servers to be exactly the ...

Re: LoL

My problem with LoL was that the matchmaking system refused to adapt to my skill level. It assumed that more play time automatically meant more skilled. Problem was that my skill plateaued. I got as good as I was ever going to get, but the matchmaking system kept putting me up against better and bet...

Privacy would be worse because of the content. E-mail is generally assumed to be insecure, so most companies don't send really sensitive stuff except when asked. So, there's a limit to what a disgruntled ISP employee can do. On the other hand, imagine what they could do with a single social security...

As I recall, they tried that with the CS class the year after us. I think they got close to 1:1. And some huge fraction of that 15-211 class was caught cheating. So probably not a net reduction in campus stress.
